In a hilly region nestled in the heart of the Galaure valley, the municipality of Hauterives, with a population of approximately 2,000, owes its fame to the presence of the 'Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval', a world-renowned monument. Over 270,000 visitors flock to Hauterives annually to see this extraordinary work of art, the product of the imagination and tireless labour of a postman who spent 33 years building his palace alone. As part of the Communauté de communes Porte de DrômArdèche, Hauterives shares a territory of hills, hillsides, valleys, and rivers with 33 communes and almost 49,500 inhabitants. It offers diverse scenery and exceptional natural sites. The village of Hauterives was fortified in the Middle Ages, and a gateway still stands in the centre of the village. Among other curiosities, the park of the local Château is home to one of the oldest Lebanese cedars planted in France, 35 metres high and eight metres in circumference.
